UGA 71-85 UK
The National Player of the Year is back. Oscar Tshiebwe leads Kentucky with 37 points and 27 rebounds.
Kentucky starts off slow again. Down 7-2 after three minutes. The issue not being the 5-point gap, but the measly 2 points in three minutes. A bad habit for this team. Kentucky essentially starts the game down 5-10 points with four minutes of play gone. Not a recipe for success. UK is down 42-34 at halftime and with Georgia seemingly being able to score at will, Kentucky was reverting to their form against South Carolina.
Second Half
The Cats come out of halftime hungry. Scoring a quick 5 points in the opening minute to close the gap. UGA leads 42-39. Two minutes later, Kentucky takes the lead for the first time since the 11:04 mark in the first half. Thanks to CJ Frederick's lone three-pointer of the night, making the score 45-46 UK. The defense is starting to swarm and disrupt the Bulldog's offense. As the cliche goes, UK having their stout defense create the offense. Getting out in transition and beating Georgia to the basket. Crashing the boards allowing UK to gain an advantage of +13 on the glass. Hopefully a trend that continues to develop after two impressive wins against Tennessee on Saturday and Georgia tonight.
It feels like the tide is turning. The games against Tennessee and Georgia didn't feel like UK was going to collapse. An all too familiar feeling after Saint Peter's last year, and Michigan St + UCLA this year. In those games, the Cats were unable to close out the last five minutes. Going scoreless for a large portion of that time period. However, in these past two games, Kentucky hasn't just survived in crunchtime, they put the game away when it mattered most. It used to feel like a 10+ point lead in the second half was inevitably going to get chipped away, like the brutal loss in Baton Rouge last year against LSU.
I'm trying to temper my expectations but something feels different. In my recap on the game against Tennessee, I highlighted certain stats that may point to a fluke game. I can probably make similar arguments for the win against Georgia. For example, Oscar Tshiebwe's monster night. Are we relying on and deferring to Oscar too much? Or was it simply the game plan to wear down and overpower the Bulldog frontcourt? Is this sustainable for a full season and will it lead to success in March?
All I know is that UK is on a win streak. Kentucky still has a long road ahead, but you have to start somewhere. Let's hope the momentum can withstand the Aggie's high powered offense. Texas A&M is coming to the Bluegrass off a 94-53 victory over South Carolina. We know coach Williams is going to haze his boys Buzzing.
